Types of Soldering Work
Our UL-recognized soldering operations provide secure, long-lasting connections for a wide range of wiring production applications. Our three main types of PCB soldering services include:
- Wire to connector
- Wire to board
- Component soldering
Wire to Connector
Wire-to-connector soldering attaches wires directly to connector pins or other terminals of the printed circuit board (PCB). We can incorporate best practices such as tinning the wire or applying epoxy or heat shrink tubing for strain relief, maximizing the longevity of the components.
Wire to Board
In wire-to-board soldering, we solder wires directly to the through-holes of a PCB or PCB pads. This connection is strong and stable but can be desoldered for repair or replacement.
Component Soldering
Through surface-mount technology or through-hole technology, we attach components directly to PCBs without wires. In surface mount technology processes, solder paste is applied directly onto the board surface, and components are placed on the paste before heating and curing. In through-hole technology processes, we wind component leads into through-holes in the board and then solder them in place.
Quality and Compliance Standards
For every soldering project for OEM electrical assemblies, MarVac Assemblies maintains high quality standards and complies with industry regulations and best practices. Our certifications and compliances include:
- WHMA/IPC A620 certification
- ISO 9001:2015 certification
- RoHS-compliant components and soldering
- UL recognized
- ESD safe
UL Recognition
Our free-hand soldering capabilities are UL recognized, which means our components and materials meet relevant safety and performance expectations. UL recognition is a sufficient standard of quality for electronics that go into larger OEM equipment assemblies.
IPC Standards
IPC standards establish broadly accepted guidelines for printed circuit board production and inspection. MarVac meets or exceeds WHMA/IPC A620 standards, which apply specifically to soldering cable and wire harnesses.
ESD Safe Procedures
We use ESD safe processes to prevent electrostatic buildup and unintended discharge, protecting sensitive components during soldering, assembly, storage, and transport.
Testing and Inspection Processes
At MarVac, we develop finely-tuned, in-depth testing and inspection protocols that meet industry safety and quality standards. Our processes include:
- Continuity testing
- In-process and final inspection
- Hi-pot testing
Continuity Testing
Continuity testing methods verify that the soldered connectors are properly attached and there are no short circuits. We check for low resistance in connectors and low conductivity between different paths by measuring electrical resistance.
Visual Inspection
Our in-process and final visual inspections include manual and automated inspections through software-enabled cameras. We check for surface-level defects, soldering mistakes, misalignment, and missing components or connections.
High Potential Testing
High potential testing, or hi-pot testing, measures a PCB’s electrical insulation to verify that no current leaks are present.
Why OEMs Choose MarVac
OEMs choose MarVac because of our attention to detail and commitment to creating high-quality PCB soldered connections that perform well over a long service life.
Trained Technicians
Our technicians are extensively trained in soldering techniques, and our operations comply with ISO 9001:2015 and UL Recognized requirements. Our entire team, from risk and feasibility assessment specialists to free-hand component soldering technicians, follows detailed, methodical workflows to guarantee quality with less rework and delays.
Reliable Throughput
Every project involves thorough inspections, continuity testing, and hi-pot testing to produce consistently high-quality products.
Consistency Across Runs
We conduct drawing and replicability assessments to create highly manufacturable and replicable processes.
